Maybe you’re a senior with lots of time on your hands and you would love to build your own website. You don’t want to build just any old website. Your goal is to build a website that can generate some income.
Whether you are a senior, or anyone of any age trying to figure out how to get started, check out this post on money-making website tips for the technically challenged.
There are several majors steps to remember when building a website that you one day hope to monetize.
FIRST YOU MUST SUPPLY A SERVICE
It’s important to understand that people search the web in hopes of finding answers to their questions. Possibly they need something explained, or maybe they need a tip on how to perform a certain task.
The easiest way to chase people away from your website is to inundate them with ads the moment they stop by your website. It’s sort of like going into a store and having a cashier say “give me twenty dollars and then have look and see if what you want is in the store.” That doesn’t make any sense.
First, you have to supply some sort of service before asking them to part with their hard-earned money.
If you have a website on How to train for a 10k Race, your visitors want to read what you have to say about preparing for the big day. They don’t want to visit your site and the first thing they see is an ad for running shoes. First things first. Share your knowledge about training to run for a 10K race. After all, this is the reason they showed up at your site.
It’s very true that content is king. The whole reason you keep hearing this over and over again is that it’s your helpful, relevant content that will want visitors to stay on your site. When you have done your best to supply an excellent answer to their question you can then consider a call to action.
Put your ads or links below the center of the page as opposed to above the fold. This will tell your visitors that you are more interested in sharing your knowledge rather than simply selling them something.
AVOID USING NOTHING BUT TEXT
It can be very disconcerting for visitors to see nothing but lines and lines of text without anything to break up the paragraphs.
Images are a great way to make your web page more interesting and easier on the eyes. Just be sure the image matches the text. For example, you don’t want to show a picture of a dog when your website is about running.
What you really want to do is show a picture of someone running. Highlighting some of your text in a color also helps to break up the monotony of lines of black text.
You can also create a link to another site that might interest your visitor. Just be sure to use the option “open in another window” so they can easily stay on your page.
The videos are great as well. You could perhaps find a YouTube video that has relevant info on running that might interest your visitor. Again, be sure to open the link to the video on a separate page. You will find this option when you create the link. It’s just a matter of checking a box.
A TABLE OF CONTENTS IS IMPORTANT
A table of contents is another way of making it easier for visitors to navigate your page. Just to go plugins and search for TOC plugin and you will find a few to choose from.
When you put in a subtitle using H3 size it automatically becomes part of the TOC box at the top of your post. So for example, if your post has five sub-titles each one will be in the TOC box and the visitor can click on any of the five sub-titles and be taken to that part of the post.
This means they can narrow down their search for a specific bit of information they are looking for.
Every single thing you can do to ensure your visitor will want to stay on your website will eventually convert to customers who will buy from you once they begin to trust you and the content you provide.
It also makes navigating a website much easier if you create a list of categories.
For example, if your website is about various types of athletic shoes you can categorize your posts accordingly.
You might have a man’s and women’s category. Perhaps you will decide to categorize the shoes for individual sports. For instance, shoes for runners, basketball players, or tennis players.
It all depends on the different types of posts you intend to write. You might also do reviews of certain shoes, and I would suggest having a shoe review category. So every shoe you do an in-depth review of would fit into that category.
Some posts you do might fit into more than one category and that will work just fine as sell. For instance, a review of a new running shoe for women could go into a women’s shoe category as well as under the review category.
IMAGE ALT TAGS
When you put images in your post be sure to put the URL(title)of the post into the space provided each time you download an image for one of your pages.
This is very important as it links that picture back to your website.
Often when you do a Google search you will see images pop up with certain sites. Those are images that have alt tags in them.
Everything you can do you point people to your website is very important. After all, it is these visitors who will one day become your customers.
You will find the meta description box at the bottom of the post you are working on. This is a very important step as it often this description that will appear when someone does a Google search that fits your website.
This is where you describe what your post is about. Try to make it as compelling as possible.
For example, “New lightweight running shoe on the market for 2020. Check out this review and find out all about it.”
In a couple of sentences, you are telling them what the post is about and that you have written a review of this new running shoe.
