Independent Living In San Francisco {and what’s best for you}

For those in the San Francisco area, there are many choices when making a move into a retirement community. Independent living in San Francisco and what’s best for you might take some research, but it’s well worth it. It’s important that the community you choose meets all your personal needs.

DEFINING INDEPENDENT LIVING

When it comes to making decisions about leaving the family home and opting for a retirement community, it’s those who can make decisions for themselves. In other words, they have the ability to examine all the choices available to them and make decisions based on their own research.

Seniors in this position are quite capable of taking care of their own everyday needs. However, for a variety of reasons they decide to make the move into a retirement community. Maybe the decision is made because of the loss of a spouse, or perhaps it’s just too expensive to be able to continue to live in their own home. Homes can also be difficult to upkeep as a senior ages.

Independent Living is far different from Assisted Living.

Loneliness and lack of a social structure also play a major role in the decision. An independent living community can offer seniors a very active independent lifestyle. Better yet, they can provide social opportunities that enable seniors to connect with other people in the same age group and with common interests.

The biggest plus of an independent living arrangement is that seniors can really get to enjoy their retirement as opposed to having to deal with making meals, housekeeping, and laundry. The free time is used to concentrate on their social life and enjoying the finer points of no longer having the responsibilities of owning a home.

Features found in an individual independent living space normally compare to what one might see in a small apartment. This normally includes a full-service kitchen for those who would like to entertain or make some of their own meals.

Here is an honest four-star review of the Broadmoor from a current resident.

Broadmoor is very different then what I am used to but it is close to my family. They are located in downtown San Francisco; I am more used to smaller cities and towns. The food is wonderful and everyone is kind. It is a well-educated community that I find I have things in commons with other residents. The staff is concerned and caring for their residents. The community is very clean. It is not handicap friendly; there are no ramps so you have to negotiate stairs. I would recommend this community to people who do not have to worry about stairs and negotiating them. Overall I am happy being here at Broadmoor.

Here is an honest five-star review of the Carlisle

Mom LOVED this place. We saw a 1-bedroom and she was ready to move in. BUT, the cost may be too high. The strong interest here is that you buy the unit and have it as an asset. But even still, the costs may make this not possible. We had dinner Mon night with 2 residents and it was great. Food was pretty good, not outrageously good as I was sort of expecting. Continental bfast, 30 points for other meals for each month. Stephanie was very sweet. She explained the Priority List ($1K). Great place and would be the easiest and best for being able to visit Mom often. Mom feels she can’t afford it. I’m looking at ways to imagine moving her there, maybe waiting longer.

Here is an honest five-star resident review of Grand Lake Gardens.

We had the experience of visiting a number of retirement centers and staying at three, and when we visited Grand Lake Gardens we knew this one for was us. We needed to be in a place where we could walk or take public transportation to do our errands. We can walk to two grocery stores, post office, hair salon, barbershop, etc. Our medical offices are a 10-minute bus ride away. We found fellow residents friendly and happy from the first day we visited. Being new, we’ve sat at dinner most evenings with new people. Folks are really relaxed and informal. The staff members are capable and accessible. All parts of the place are cared for; even the stairways — which we use in addition to the busy elevators — are newly painted and well lighted. The top floor dining room is a gem.
