Clocks For Seniors That Could Save A Life

At some point we seniors just have to accept that a time will come in our lives we will most likely reach a stage when we become forgetful. This can be very serious, especially when we are taking crucial drugs that help us get through life from day to day. There are even seniors who are taking life-saving drugs and so clocks for seniors that could save a life would be a terrific help.

This is especially true for seniors who have vision issues or are perhaps in the early stages of dementia. I recall one story of a senior in his mid-80’s who would forget what time of day it was. He was having problems figuring out if it was a.m. or p.m.

As a rule, he would go to bed around 3 p.m. and get up at 5 a.m. Sometimes when he woke up and saw the clock, he figured it was around 5-7 a.m. and would get up and begin his daily routine.

Clocks come in many shapes and sizes. But only some are ideal for seniors with memory issues.

He would get-dressed, have breakfast, and go look for the paper. Because he slept with the curtains closed his room was always dark, so it was no help in distinguishing between night and day.

Often when he thought it was 5-7 a.m. the next morning, it was actually just 5-7 p.m. the very same day he went to sleep and not the next day. He had only actually slept for a few hours.

There were also more serious ramifications when there was confusion about the time of day. He would take his meds in the a.m., so if he didn’t realize in time that it wasn’t a.m. the next day yet, he risked double-dosing on his diabetic medication, and that could have very serious implications.

Mistaking medication doses can happen very easily if seniors live on their own.

They don’t have anyone around to make sure they are taking their medication at the proper times.

Family caregivers can’t always be there and spend a lot of their time worrying. They know full well their parent wants to be self-sufficient for as long as possible and has no desire to move into a retirement facility of some kind.

Often, more to the point is the fact that many seniors don’t have a lot of choices. They simply can’t afford the ever-increasing costs of retirement facilities, so staying home is their best option if they can remain self-sufficient. So the best option seems to be, finding ways to get around problems like forgetfulness.

Seniors who have vision problems or who tend to be forgetful need a very special kind of clock. They need a clock that has several helpful functions.

There are some very amazing clocks out there that do a lot more than tell time.

  • They are easy to set up and are easy to understand.
  • They have clear displays of Morning, Evening, and Nighttime instead of time a.m and p.m. settings.
  • The clock has a manual time set-up. You just set the time you want and you’re done.
  • It’s important that the clock saves your settings in the event you unplug and move it to a different location.
  • The menu is activated by simply touching the screen and will disappear in a few minutes if activated by accident.

The American Life Day Clock has many of the features mentioned above.

The DayClock by American Lifetime is the only one of its kind to include an Alarm Function and multi-color display option. Set up to three daily alarms and choose between a white or yellow display.

This DayClock also has a BATTERY BACKUP in case of a power outage, it will be reset to the correct time and date when the power returns.

They offer an unconditional guarantee as well.

There is also a one-year unlimited warranty and within that 365 day period, they will ship you a new one if the one you purchased has an issue.

The senior who I mentioned above used this clock with excellent results.

As usual, he kept waking up during the night, but this time when he looked at the clock and it showed the time and day in big letters, so he just went back to sleep instead of being confused and getting up.

It also prevented him from double-dosing on his medication and was a relief for the family caregivers.

Find the clock that works for you.

The clock itself is very easy to set-up, but to avoid any confusion, a senior can have it set up by someone else like a family member or friend if they prefer.

The only issue might be that the screen can be quite bright and can light up a room, but it is easily remedied by switching to blue type on black. This really cuts down on the brightness and is still very easy to read.

Well, for anyone who has vision problems or suffers from any sort of memory issues, this clock is a Godsend.

Not only is it better for seniors who deal with these issues, but it is also better for their caregivers who will be relieved that the senior in question will no longer be confused about the time of day.

Considering the unconditional guarantee and the one-year unlimited warranty it certainly appears that this clock is worth trying. This is especially true considering it’s not really that expensive in the first place considering the peace of mind it can provide.

Let’s face it, clocks for seniors that can save a life can be indispensable.
